File/video protection in Sky Pilot

Sky Pilot offers advanced file protection, including but not limited to:

  • Download Limits (Files can only be downloaded a limited (set by you) number of times for each order)

  • Expiring Access (You can set up access to expire after a certain period of time, or specify an exact expiration date)

  • Video View Limits (For stores that integrate with video hosting services such as Vimeo, Wistia, or Sprout, Sky Pilot allows you to limit how many times a video can be watched

  • If the purchaser has an account in your Shopify store, they will be required to log in to access their files and videos

Access Alerts in Sky Pilot

Sky Pilot allows you to be notified if an order is accessed by too many different connections(IP addresses). Once you have been notified, you can easily revoke access to the abused order. To set up access alerts in Sky Pilot, follow the instructions below:

1) Go to Settings

2) Click on the Access abused alerts tab and adjust your alert settings as desired

Can I make all file and video access pages password protected?

Since Sky Pilot integrates with your Shopify customer accounts, as long as the customer has an account, they will be required to log in to view their purchased files or videos.

Obviously, it is not possible to force customers that do not have an account to log in to view their files/videos since they do not have a login and password. Because of this, some shops choose to force all customers to create an account before checking out.

In our experience, it is much better to continue to allow a guest checkout because being forced to create an account can deter customers from ordering in the first place, which can decrease sales. It is actually very rare that a customer will share a link and you can easily set up an access alert in your Sky Pilot settings to notify you when an order has been accessed by an excessive number of IP addresses and then revoke access for these orders.

In some cases, however, it may be necessary to force a customer to create an account before purchasing so that the customer will be forced to log in to view their files/videos. This can be done by editing your cart template in your Shopify theme to not display a checkout link unless the customer is logged in and instead display a login link.
